Doppler test is a non-invasive diagnostic test that allows to assess the condition of arteries and veins and, above all, to detect their obstruction, which may be caused, for example, by atherosclerotic lesions. It is also useful for the detection of life-threatening aneurysms.

Thanks to this examination we are able to evaluate the efficiency of veins and arteries, as well as identify exactly where the disease changes occurred, such as venous blockages and aneurysms. The stenosis of veins or arteries in the form of atherosclerotic plaque or clots is a real threat to the patient’s life, because it can cause such dangerous conditions as stroke, heart attack or pulmonary thromboembolism. It is very important to detect blood flow abnormalities and to take remedial measures in the right time.

Doppler examination should be performed when there are suspicions of atherosclerotic changes in arteries or other blood vessels, varicose veins, suspicion of aneurysm, and other conditions indicating abnormal blood flow in veins and arteries. Another indication for Doppler examination are tumors, in which blood flow in lymph nodes is evaluated, liver tumors are differentiated and their degree of malignancy is assessed.

Doppler ultrasound allows to examine blood flow and changes in the carotid and subclavian arteries, heart, abdominal organs, genitals and upper and lower extremities.

Doppler examination involves the use of the so-called “Doppler effect” for diagnostic purposes. The head of the Doppler apparatus applied to the patient’s body sends out an ultrasound wave, which penetrates the body. This wave is reflected by blood molecules that are moving and returning to the head. At this point, the signal is sent to an ultrasound device that records changes in the frequency of the sound wave reflected from the flowing blood. The test result is presented as an image on the monitor (the places where the blood flow is lower or ceases at all are marked on the monitor)

This test is non-invasive and painless. It does not require prior preparation. The patient removes the clothes from the places where the head will be placed and then lies down on the couch. The doctor applies the camera head to the skin lubricated with a special gel. The image of the reflected ultrasound waves is visible on the monitor and allows to assess blood flow and the condition of blood vessels (arteries and veins) in real time. Doppler examination is accompanied by the sound of blood flow – changes in noise are also an indication to the doctor that something disturbing is happening in a given place..

The result of the Doppler test is obtained immediately, in the form of a graph or a colour drawing described by the doctor. It may be the basis for referring the patient to a procedure, or for undertaking pharmacological treatment. The Doppler device allows you to measure blood flow through the vessels and also to measure the cross-section of arteries and veins, which allows you to accurately determine the venous capacity. It is also used to assess the blood supply to certain internal organs and to detect cancer lesions, as many of the tumours are highly blood-supported.
